English Civil War (1642-1651)

The English Civil War was a series of armed conflicts and political manouvers that took place between Roayalists (Cavaliers) and Parliamentarians (Roundheads) for the control of England, Scotland, and Ireland.

The basis for the war seems to be changing viewpoints on the role of a monarch and the legislative bodies needed to run the country. Believe me, I know that is an over simplification. And, of course, religion played a part.

Essentially, Charles I firmly believed in the devine right of kings and did not like to be questioned or disobeyed. He didn't like to be told "no".

Parliament, on the other hand, wanted to ensure their place and 'rights' they had achieved over the years.

My Research:

I have not found any direct evidence of involvement by my ancestors. Many researchers believe Theophilus WHALEY was a Lieutenant Robert WHALEY who served with the Parliamentarian forces and fled to the North American colonies, Virginia specifically, when Charles II regained the throne.
