Wars have always influenced people directly, as when an army moves
through your farm land, or indirectly (taxes, lost friends &
family, etc). These pages discuss those conflicts that I believe
affected my ancestors.
The viewpoints are my own; don't get all worked up if I take a
simplistic view of the conflict. I am not a historian, just a genealogy
researcher who understands that the reasons behind any war are not
as simple as our high school history books portray.
The English Civil War pitted royalists -- those that supported
a strong monarchy and King Charles I -- against those that supported
limits on the monarchy and a stronger role for parliament (i.e.
the nobles). The Parliamentarians won for a time but eventually
lost after Oliver Cromwell's death.
Colonial Wars
The English colonies fought several "wars" with the Indians
and found themselves involved in European conflicts from time to
time. "Colonial wars" refers to any conflict that occurred
in the Englishs colonies until independence was initiated
This war expanded very quickly from the Wampanoag tribe to include
the Podunk and Nipmuck as well. The Narragansett tribe was attacked
in late 1675 because they had desirable land, not because they were
involved with the war.
Tensions over land increased as more and more English arrived.
The natives were pushed toward the hostile Iroquois and Mohican
lands to the west. In the end, success was ensured through re-supply
by sea and the tribes had no such support system in place.
The North American part of the Seven Years' War between Britain
and France. Colonists fought with the British Army and their native
allies against the French Amy and their native allies. The result
was a huge victory for Great Britain and a loss for France, which
lost almost all possessions in North America.
The US War of Independence was fought throughout the 13 colonies
that joined the revolt.
The War of 1812 is a controversial topic. Many call is the "second
war of independence" from England while others call it a land
grab. Both assertions have their points.
Commonly (and erroneously) call the US "civil war", the
war was fought between states that did not like the direction the
federal government was heading (called the Confederate States of
America or CSA) and those that wanted a strong central government
(the victorious United States of America or USA).
Prince Consort's Own Rifle Brigade
John DALY
(1848), James
DALY (1850), and Michael DALY (1854) each enlisted in the Rifle
Brigade (present-day Royal Greenjackets) when they were old enough.
They served in Canada and used it as an opportunity to immigrate
to the United States.
