War of the Rebellion (1861-1865)

Commonly (and erroneously) call the US "civil war", the war was fought between states that did not like the direction the federal government was heading (called the Confederate States of America or CSA) and those that wanted a strong central government (the victorious United States of America or USA). The war was a long-time coming as divisions grew between two very different economic and social systems; the industrialized north and the plantation south. The history, as you can guess was written by the victors.

My Research:

My research has identified several ancestors who participated in this war, including:

  • John O HUFF (1737-1887) served with the 9th New Jersey Volunteers from September 1861 through February 1865 when he was discharged from the Newark General Army Hospital.
  • Peter LOSEY (c1823-1864) served with the 15th New Jersey Volunteers from August 1862 through December 1864 when he died at Annapolis.
  • Henry Clay SPENCER (1844-1929) worked in a cannon factory, probably in Dutchess County, New York. While he remained a civilian it was considered a 'wartime occupation'.
