Germany did not officially become a unified nation until the late
19th century. Before that time, "Germany" was a collection of principalities,
city-states, and other areas unified by a common language and the
Holy Roman
Empire.
Hesse
Hesse is located in western-central Germany and produced many
immigrants to the New World. Most Americans will know about the
Hessian mercinaries employed by the British during the revolt that
created the United States of America. Most Hessian immigrants,
however, were simple folk who wanted nothing to do with war.
The Palatinate is
a territory along the Rhine River that saw a great many immigrants
to the New World. Many immigrants from this region were brought
to New York by the English Queen Anne to help harvest pine pitch
and other resources to support the Royal Navy during Queen Anne's
War.
