John DEELY was baptised on 14 Apr 1848 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Limerick, Co Limeric, Ireland. His godparents were John HARDIMAN and Johanna CUNNINGHAM, who may have been neightbors, friends or relatives. The church register indicates his parents were Michael & Johanna DEELY.

John enlisted with the Prince Consort's Own Rifle Brigade on 8 may 1862 at Dublin at the age of 14. Today, the Rifle Brigade is called the Royal Greenjackets. He was found in Ottawa, Canada with the regiment on 7 May 1868. His gravestone shows a musical theme and family lore says he was in the regimental band.
