John O Huff (1837-1887)

John O HUFF was born 22 Nov 1837 in Sussex Co, NY to William Coursen HUFF and Mary Catharine LOSEY, probably in Walpack Twp on their farm.

John O. Huff
Union Army, Private
9th New Jersey Volunteers, Company E

John served with the 9th New Jersey Volunteers from 20 Sep 1861 to 11 Feb 1865. He re-enlisted 17 Jan 1864 for 3 more years, along with a majority of the 9th. Company E was raised in and around Sussex County, New Jersey. The 9th NJ spent the early part of the war in North Carolina but after re-enlistment they went into Virginia.

On 30 Jul 1864 John was wounded by a Minié ball to the right hand during the Battle of the Crater at Petersburg, Virginia. The 9th was with XVIII Corps under General Ord, who was providing support for General Burnside's IX Corps [Source: OR TBD].

John's thumb was amputated at the field hospital. He then spent the next month in hospitals from Fort Monroe to Philadelphia and finally Newark. His pension records indicate he married Mary Ann Crawn on 24 Dec 1864 and their youngest child, Sarah (a minor when he died in 1887), was born 2 Jan 1874.

His pension records and medical records are more useful than his military records, which only indicate muster and some pay information.

John married Mary Ann CRAWN while on leave from the Army Hospital in Newark on 24 Dec 1864 in Sussex Co, NJ. Mary Ann was his first cousin once removed, being the granddaughter of John's paternal aunt Elizabeth (Huff) KEEN.

Between 1868 and 1870 John and Mary Ann moved to Standing Stone Twp, Bradford Co, PA. They had the following children:

  • Rosebelle (1868-) married Joseph HARDENSTINE and had 5 children
  • Mahlon O (1870-1939) -- no issue -- he was married once but "it didn't take"
  • Sarah Margaret (1874-1940) who was variously called "Maggie", "Margaret", and "Sarah" married Joseph Franklin WILLIAMS and had 9 children

John died 17 Feb 1887 in Standing Stone Twp, Sussex Co, PA and is buried at Keen Summit Cemetery not far from where he lived.
