Jeremiah Shay - 1914 Journal
The 1914 work journal of Jeremiah Michael
Shay (1857-1937) gives us a flavor for the maintenance
schedule of a railroad man. Jerry had worked for the New York Central
RR and Pennsylvania Central RR before joining the little Susquehannah & New
York (S&NY) Railroad as the Supervisor of the Maintenance of
Way.
He worked for the S&NY from about 1904 until his retirement. The S&NY ran a line between Towanda and Williamsport across
Barclay Mountain in Bradford & Sullivan counties. The railroad
ran, more or less, parallel to present-day Route 414 below Canton.
Towns like Marsh Hill, Ralston, and Trout Run were on his route.
The route was described as harrowing in at least one
reference book.
Contents
While most of this journal is about day-to-day activities on the
S&NY railroad there are moments of family events, such as
his daughter Jennie's marriage, baptism of several grandchildren,
death of a relative (McNiff), and a visit to his purported mistress
(Mrs Hotelling).
