Jeremiah Shay - Sources
13 Jul 1857 - Birth
Our only record of birth is his death
certificate.
21
May 1874 - New York Passenger Lists
Jerh and John Shea, aged 17 and 24 respectively,
arrived in New York aboard the SS Nevada. The ship was out of Liverpool,
England by way of Queenstown (Cork), Ireland where they probably
boarded.
30 June 1880 - US Census for Veteran, Chemung Co, NY
This record identifies Jerry's wife as Jane
Grady, daughter of
Patrick & Bridget Grady. Patrick & Mary Grady are living next door,
which almost certainly gives us Jane's grandparents too!
25 June 1900 - US Census for McHenry Twp, Lycoming Co, PA
The family was living in or near Lock Haven and Adrian had not
been born yet.
22 April
1910 - US Census for Towanda, Bradford Co, PA
The Shay family finally settled in Towanda and Jane had her last
child, Louise, in Oct 1905. In fact, some of the children had already
left home.
1914 Work Journal
Shows how a railroad maintenance supervisor worked in the early
part of the 20th century when trains were still the primary method
of long distance travel or for heavy hauling.
7 Jan
1920 - US Census for Towanda, Bradford Co, PA
Jerry is still working for the railroad in 1920. Mayme is 37 and
still unmaried and living at home. This was not out of the ordinary;
children generally left when they began a new family and not before.
7 May
1930 - US Census for Towanda, Bradford Co, PA
This page is confusing. Jerry was living with his daughter Lena
McCracken in 1930. I don't know who Kinsman might be. And the list
is split between May 6 & 7 mid-family.
Jerry Shay and his wife Jane only received a gravestone several
decades later when their grandchildren Philip Daly & Betty Daly
purchased a marker for them. Information inscribed on the headstone
was taken from Jerry's death certificate.
3 Jul 1937 - The Daily Review
(newspaper) - Obituary
Jerry Shay died of an infection contracted after he had his appendix
out. His grandson, Philip Daly, remembered that Jerry was mowing
the lawn when he originally fell ill.
