Lyman Spencer (1803-1898)

Code: 7

Lineage: Enoch-6, Theophilus-5, Michael-4, Robert-3, John-2, Michael-1, Gerard-A, Michael-B, John-C

Lyman SPENCER was born 9 Jan 1803 in Pawling, Dutchess Co, NY to Enoch SPENCER and Lydia TURNER.

Lyman married Esther BROWNELL about 1826 in Pawling, Dutchess Co, NY and they had the following children:

  • James Wright SPENCER (1827-1901) who moved to Michigan
  • Elizabeth SPENCER (1829-bef 1910) who married Daniel D SELLECK and moved to Bradford Co, PA
  • Wesley SPENCER (1831-1848)
  • Lydia SPENCER (1834-) married Samuel WHITEHEAD, who was the school superintendent in Burlington Twp, Bradford Co, PA for many years
  • Clarissa SPENCER (1842-1887) married Charles UTTER and remained in Dutchess Co, NY
  • Henry Clay SPENCER (1844-1929) moved to Burlington Twp, Bradford Co, PA and married Amanda Jane DUNN (1850-1925)
  • Lyman Harvey SPENCER (1849-) married Susan D _____ in Burlington Twp, Bradford Co, PA

The 1850 US Federal Census for Burlington, Bradford Co, PA [Page 220] indicates that Lyman was 47 and Easter [sic] was 44. James R (25), Lydia (16), Clarence [sic] (8), Henry C (5), and Lyman H (1) were living in the house. "Clarence" was Clarissa.

Lyman and Esther moved to Burlington Twp, Bradford Co, PA between 13 Jun 1860 (US census) and 22 Nov 1864 (found to own property). Lyman did appear in the 1865 NY census in Pawling, Dutchess Co, NY so it is unclear when they actually moved. Maybe the 1864 purchase was for one of their daughters who seem to have moved before they did. This is unclear at this time.

The 1865 New York Census for Pawling indicates that Lyman was a 62 year old farmer living with his 54 year old wife and sons Henry (28) and Harvey (16). The census indicates Esther had 6 children.

A family story says that Lyman walked all the way from Pawling to Burlington, which indicates they did not take the train. The cost probably would have been too much to bring all of their possessions so they probably use a wagon.

Lyman died 17 Apr 1898 in West Burlington Twp, Bradford Co, PA and is buried at the Mt. Lake Cemetery in Burlington Twp, Bradford Co, PA.
