Genealogy Timeline1700 - 17501700 Sarah WEST (Francis-3, Francis-2, Matthew-1) was born 1 Jun 1700 at North Kingstown or West Greenwich, Kent Co, RI. She would later marry John PHILLIPS. 1701 1701-1713 War of Spanish Succession -- This war was fought when the grandson of Louis XIV of France succeeded to the throne of Spain and Louis attempted to form a strong Franco-Hispanic alliance. The will of Charles II of Spain prohibited the breakup of Spain or of Spain becoming part of a French empire. The other major powers in Europe could not allow such a super power to exist and formed the Grand Alliance to prevent the bloc from becoming a reality. The participants included France, Spain, and some German states allied against Austria, England, the Netherlands, and most of the remaining German states with Brandenburg-Prussia playing a major role among the Germans. During this time England took Gibraltar, Spain lost the Netherlands and land in Northern Italy, and parts of North America were transferred from France to England. The Peace of Utrecht ended the war though Louis XIV's grandson was allowed to remain on the throne of Spain. This war was also called Queen Anne's War by many. During the was a plan was hatched to bring Germans from the Palatine region to the American Colonies as cheap labor in support of the war. England needed pine pitch to caulk warships... the Germans were cheap labor and the Hudson Valley had more than enough pine trees. In the end the scheme came to very little and the Germans were allowed to move to other areas of the colonies. 1709 Michael SPENCER (Robert-3, John-2, Michael-1, Gerard-A, Michael-B, John-C) was born in East Greenwich, Kent Co, RI.
