Genealogy Timeline1750 - 17991752 Gregorian Calendar Adopted by Great Britain -- Parliament finally acknowledged the Julian Calendar was off and adopted the calendar developed by the Roman Catholic Church in 1582. Parliament also moved the start of the civil calendar from March to January. During the next few decades many in England and the North American colonies used the old, new or both systems in records, etc. About 1752 Johann Conrad MENGES (1) married Anna Maria _____ in either Hebstahl or Eberbach. We know of two of their children: Maria Elizabeth (1754) and Johann Conrad Jr. (1757). 1753 Sussex County, New Jersey Formed -- On 16 May 1753 land was set off from Morris County and called Sussex. It too would be split some years later to create Warren County. 1756 1756-1763 French and Indian War -- This war was about control of the inland regions of North America, namely the Ohio Valley. French and British interests were colliding and it was only a matter of time before the conflict erupted. "Border" skirmishes began as early as 1754 but war wasn't officially declared until two years later. Uh, so where do the Indians named in the name given to the war come in? They were used by both sides as scouts and allies to fight where the main combatants could not. This is not to say the native tribes didn't have their own interests -- namely they had the silly notion the Ohio Valley belonged to them. Neither the French nor the British were concerned about that question, though. The French and their allies did well in the Ohio Valley itself and controlled access into the area with several forts along the Allegheny River. In the north, however, the British were to take control and win the war. The key to the war in Canada was Quebec. General James Wolfe commanded 9,000 troops along with 20 ships that fought and took the fort from July to September of 1759. With control of Quebec, the English had de facto control of Canada and the supply lines to the French soldiers in the Ohio Valley. It took until 1763 before the Treaty of Paris was signed in which the French ceded all of North America east of the Mississippi to the English. The French also turned over their claims to New Orleans and all lands west of the Mississippi to Spain (in return England got Florida from Spain). By the way, this is a war in which neither the French nor the Indians won. 1757 Theophilus SPENCER (Michael-4, Robert-3, John-2, Michael-1, Gerard-A, Michael-B, John-C) married Elizabeth MATTESON (Abraham-3, Hezekiah-2, Henry-1) on 11 Nov 1757, most probably in Greenwich, RI. Their children included: Martha, Eunice, Betsey or Elizabeth, Abigail, Theophilus, Rodman (1759-1811), Michael (1761-?), Zilpha (c1777-?), Enoch (1779-1869), and Mary Ann (c1788-after 1850). Johann Conrad MENGES (Conrad-1) was born 24 Sep 1757 in Williams Township, Northampton Co, PA. He is usually referred to as Conrad Jr. in most genealogy notes to separate him from his father. In records of the time, he was usually just referred to as 'Conrad'. 1758 Abigail SPENCER nee CLOSSON (Caleb) died about 1758 at the age of 40. Did she die in childbirth? Her youngest, twin girls, were born in 1757... Her husband, Michael SPENCER, did not remarry this time. 1760 Theophilus SPENCER (Michael-4, Robert-3, John-2, Michael-1, Gerard-A, Michael-B, John-C) moved his family to the Town of Pawling, Dutchess Co, NY from RI sometime before 1760. 1762 Joseph DUNN was born in 1762. 1764 Rachel MATTHAR was born in 1764 and married Joseph DUNN in 1784. 1765 Alexander WILLIAMS (Matthew-1) was born between 1765 and 1770. 1770 Julian HAGERTY was born about 1770. 1772 Peter HUFF (Jacobus-1) was born about 1772, probably in Sussex Co, NJ. 1775 Benjamin SHAVER was born about 1775 in PA. 1775 1775-1776 Influenza Strikes Worldwide -- Considered one of the worst flu epidemics to date, many areas of the "known" world were affected by this outbreak. 1775-1783 US War of Independence -- It's amazing the importance of this successful rebellion to the entire world. By contrast, however, there are more books about the Civil War and later wars on bookshelves. Granted, these other conflicts were important but without the success of the rebellion against the English crown history would have gone in a completely different direction. I have written a separate article on the US Revolution that may be of interest. 1776 About 1776 Johann Conrad MENGES Jr. (Conrad-1) married Maria _____. We know of four children: Conrad (1777); Maria Elizabeth (1781); Heinrich (1785); and Maria (1788). Matthew WILLIAMS (1), according to his obituary on 24 Jan 1814 in the Sussex Register, served during the US War of Independence. No primary evidence has been found to support this claim. 1777 Conrad MENGES / MINGOS (Conrad-2, Conrad-1) was born about 1777 in Forks Township, Northampton Co, PA. Many records show his name as 'Coonrad'. 1778 Sarah Ann HENDERSHOT (Johannes-3, Michael-2, Michael-1, Wilhelm-A) was born about 1778 in Sussex Co, NJ. She would later marry Enoch SPENCER (6). Joseph DUNN married Rachel MATTHAR 23 Nov 1784 in Sussex Co, NJ. We know they had at least one son, William DUNN who served in the War of 1812. 1785 William DUNN (Joseph) was born in 1785 in NY. He married Mary YETTER (JETTER) and they had about 10 children; two of whom moved to Bradford Co, PA were: Nelson (1822-1904) and Barclay (1830-?). Both lived in Standing Stone Township for a time but Nelson moved to Burlington Township before 1870 and Barclay moved to Franklin Township some time afterward. Even though they were in two different towns their farms were not that far apart. 1786 Michael HENESCHEIDT (Michael-1) died in 1786 at Hampton Township, Sussex Co, NJ. His wife, Elizabeth SCHERMERHORN preceded him. 1788 Measles in the Mid-Atlantic Region -- A measles epidemic affected Philadelphia and New York for much of 1788. 1789 George Washington President -- With the Articles of Confederation replaced by a federal Constitution and the war for independence concluded, George Washington was made the first President of the United States of America. He served two terms and set the standard. 1793 Over 4,000 Dead in Philadelphia from Yellow Fever! -- Yellow Fever struck Philadelphia in 1793, most probably through the summer months, leaving 4,000 dead. Peter HUFF (Jacobus-1) married Sarah Ann HENDERSHOT (Johannes-3, Michael-2, Michael-1, Wilhelm-A) 31 Oct 1793 in Sussex Co, NJ. The complete list of their children is not known but we do know about Elizabeth (1794-1883); Rebecca (c1800-?); and William Coursen (1818-1898). Charles (1811-?) may also have been one of their children though this is speculation at this time. Michael HENDERSHOT (Michael-1, Wilhelm-A) died in 1793 at Belvidere, Oxford Township, Sussex Co, NJ. 1794 Yellow Fever Returns to Philadelphia -- 1794 saw a repeat of the previous year with Yellow Fever causing many deaths throughout the area. Cities were especially vulnerable to opportunistic diseases due to the crowded conditions in some parts of the community as well as poor sanitary conditions. Elizabeth HUFF (Peter-2, Jacobus-1) was born in Stillwater Township, Sussex Co, NJ 30 Sep 1794. 1796 More Deaths from Yellow Fever -- 1795 seems to have been the exception rather than the rule in Philadelphia in the 1790s. William KEEN (John) was born 4 Apr 1796 at Stillwater Township, Sussex Co, NJ. His parents were John KEEN and Margaret ROSE. Conrad MENGES (Conrad-2, Conrad-1) married Sarah _____ about 1796 in Northampton Co, PA. Johann Conrad MENGES Sr. (1) died 9 Dec 1797 in Forks Township, Northampton Co, PA. 1798 More Deaths from Yellow Fever -- Most of this decade has seen this dreaded disease strike the Philadelphia region. Without changes diseases could return summer after summer. For many, it the death was just how the world was. War with France! -- An undeclared war with a recent ally during the American Revolution began about May 1798 and lasted until February 1801. Almost all of the conflict occurred at sea. It all started when France, during the French Revolution, attacked ships headed to ports of those who supported the French King. That included Britain and other European powers. The French would stop ships, board them and seize cargo. Congress took exception to this and authorized US ships to take action to defend themselves but did not declare war. 1799 Nancy SHAVER (Benjamin) was born in 1799, probably at Cayuga Co, NY (Tompkins Co was formed from Cayuga). She married John MINGUS about 1820.
