Genealogy Timeline1800 - 18241800 John MENGES / MINGUS / MINGOS (Conrad-3, Conrad-2, Conrad-1) was born 5 May 1800 at Lower Mount Bethel Township, Northampton Co, PA. Elizabeth SPENCER nee MATTESON w/o Theophilus-5 died sometime between the 1800 and 1810 US Census. She appeared as the Head of Household in the 1800 Census for Pawling, Dutchess Co, NY but was absent in the 1810 Census while her son Enoch appears in the same general area (around familiar neighbors). Enoch SPENCER and Lydia TURNER d/o Stephen TURNER were married and had about 10 children according to the 1865 NY Census. The marriage date of Enoch and Lydia is not known. The list of their children is not clearly proven though the following are probably included in this family: Laura A; Rhoda; Lyman (1803-1898); Annie or Annis (c1805-?); Horace (c1810-1882); Belinda (1813-1856); Bennett (c1815-?); and Abigail (c1818-?). 1801 Thomas Jefferson Elected President -- He served as President through the most of the first decade of the new century. 1802 West Point Established -- The new nation needed a way to train its own military leaders and thus a military college was established at West Point overlooking the Hudson River on 16 Mar 1802. 1803 Louisiana Purchase -- President Thomas Jefferson technically ignores the Constitution and buys a huge tract of land west of the Mississippi River from France. This act, however, gives rise to the feeling in the country of unlimited land. Lyman SPENCER (Enoch-6, Theophilus-5, Michael-4, Robert-3, John-2, Michael-1, Gerard-A, Michael-B, John-C) was born 9 Jan 1803 in the Town of Pawling, Dutchess Co, NY. 1804 Jacobus HUFF (1) died Jun 1804 in Sussex Co, NJ. 1805 Esther BROWNELL d/o Edward BROWNELL was born 12 Aug 1805 in NY, most probably in the Town of Pawling, Dutchess Co, NY. She would later marry Lyman SPENCER (7). 1809 James Madison Elected President -- He served two terms and led the nation in the inconclusive War of 1812. He was also considered the Father of the Constitution. 1810 Ontario County, Pennsylvania Formed -- The Pennsylvania Legislature authorized the creation of a new county, to be called Ontario (meaning 'beautiful lake'), during the 1810 session. Land was taken from Luzerne and Lycoming counties along the border with New York State to form the new county. The Legislature, however, did not authorize a local government to be set up within the boundaries of the new county. This did not happen for another two years. 1811 James CRAWN (Peter) was born about 1811 in NJ. 1812 1812-1814 War of 1812 between US and Great Britain -- The War of 1812 is sometimes called the Second War of American Independence. It didn't need to be fought, there was no clear winner, and little was gained from it. The War Department mismanaged supplies and the soldiers suffered from it. I've written a more in-depth article about the War of 1812 separately. Ontario County, Pennsylvania Changed to Bradford -- The state Legislature finally authorized the establishment of a local seat of government for the young county and changed its name. The county seat would be called Meansville, Williamston, and several other names for another 15 years before Towanda finally won out. 1814 Matthew WILLIAMS died Jan 1814 in Sussex Co, NJ at the advanced age of 124 years! His obituary was luckily reported in the Sussex Register which has begun publication the previous year. Conrad MENGES (Conrad-2, Conrad-1) served from 17 Sep 1814 to November of that same year but was sent home with rheumatism. He was only 37. His eldest son, Peter, who was only 17 at the time substituted for Conrad. He signed a receipt on 10 Nov 1814 [PA Archives, 6th series, vol. 7, p205]. Conrad served in Captain William Fischer's company. William DUNN (Joseph) served as a Captain during the latter stages of the War of 1812. His company was formed in Sep 1814 and served until Dec 1814. His infantry company was raised out of Sussex County, NJ and was assigned to the Second Regiment New Jersey Detailed Militia. The Second Regiment was stationed at Paulus Hoeck, NJ and commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel John Seward reporting to Brigadier-General William Colfax. "Short" enlistments were not uncommon during this war. 1815 Samuel RUTAN was born about 1815 in Sussex Co, NJ. 1816 1816 was known as the Year Without a Summer, the Poverty Year or Eighteen hundred and froze to death. We know know that Mount Tambora in present-day Indonesia erupted in April 1815, ejecting over a million and a half metric tons of dust into the upper atmosphere. June saw two large snow storms that devastated crops throughout the northeastern United States. Ice was reported as far south as Pennsylvania on lakes and rivers in July and August.
