1861-1865 War of the Rebellion -- The war was initially originally fought over states' rights versus the federal authority defined in the Constitution.

Essentially the argument goes that what power the Constitution does not explicitly give to the federal government belongs to the states. The issue of slavery in southern states then came into play as various activists joined together to fight as one against slavery, for women's suffrage, etc. While the northern economy was supported by immigrant labor in the factories, the southern economy was supported by the cheap labor provided by slaves. To eliminate slavery, its supporters said, would do significant damage to the economy.

The Lincoln administration only expanded the reasons for the war later to include slavery in a move to block European countries from recognizing the Confederate States of America.

The war put millions of men in uniform and in crowded camps. Disease spread fast since medicine was barely a profession by today's standards. The advent of rifled guns and the minnié ball, which usually resulted in bone fractures and infection, contributed to the death toll. Field hospitals were dirty and were more feared by soldiers than the battle itself.

Dysentery and other like diseases were rampant. The war also destroyed many civilian homes, roadways, and left many water sources contaminated. The destruction of crops also had a significant impact on the quality and quantity of food available to soldiers and civilians in and near the war zones.
