But that picture is too simplistic. There were many problems throughout Europe between various nations. Many saw wars as inevitable; one of the ways kings and their governments settled disputes with others. There were many issues that had not been addressed properly after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. The United States did not enter the war until 1917 when Germany, France, and England were exhausted from over three years of trench warfare. Russia too was exhausted and was forced into a peace with Germany when they could not go on any longer. Mismanagement by Russian officers, many appointed because of their status in the nobility rather than any military skill, had probably done as much if not more damage than the enemy. A first revolution and second revolution rocked the nation and, in 1919, internal civil war broke out. 1916 Infantile Polio Epidemic in the US -- Over 7,000 deaths and more than 27,000 reported cases in North America's worst polio epidemic began in 1916. Jay Ralph SPENCER (Henry-9, Henry-8, Lyman-7, Enoch-6, Theophilus-5, Michael-4, Robert-3, John-2, Michael-1, Gerard-A, Michael-B, John-C) and Minnie Margaret WILLIAMS (Joseph-5, Albert-4, John-3, Alexander-2, Matthew-1) were married at Towanda, Bradford Co, PA on 12 Jan 1916. They had seven children, including: baby girl, Cleone, Jay Jr., Elwood, Berneda, Alberta, and Janice. Joseph Eugene DALY (James-1, Michael-A) married Elizabeth L SHAY (Jeremiah-1) on 29 Nov 1916 at the SS Peter & Paul [RC] Parish in Towanda, Bradford Co, PA. They had six children, 4 boys then (fraternal) twin girls. 1917 US Enters War in Europe -- After years of trying to avoid war, the nation was swept with patriotic fever once war was finally declared. Trench warfare and new, more efficient weapons had exhausted the European powers. Russia pulled out of the war in 1917, unable to continue and forced to sign a separate peace agreement. 1918 Spanish Influenza Spreads Worldwide -- 1918 marked the high point of this deadly pandemic that affected most countries of the world. This outbreak preceded antibiotics and many other advances in medicine. The trenches of Europe during World War I also contributed to the spread of this disease. More people were hospitalized in 1918 due to influenza than wounds and army training camps became a breeding ground for the disease adding to the strain of fighting a major war. Ignorance of how the disease was spread and adherence to basic sanitary conditions (at a time when people might bathe once a week) along with advances in transportation enabled the disease to spread worldwide. PAULES of Ulster, and Mahlon HUFF of Wysox; one sister Mrs. C. M. MINGLE of Ulster; and three bothers Abraham, William, and Nichols [sic] CRAWN, all of Towanda.
