1939

World War II: 1939-1945
This war, too, was probably inevitable. The Versailles Treaty closing the Great War imposed such a burden on Germany that it was nearly impossible to exist. Inflation climbed at an incredible rate, leaving many jobless and disillusioned. Into that weak state stepped the extremists and offered hope in the form of slogans and pageantry.

The United States, which had always been a little isolationist, decided it wouldn't be brought into "another European" war. The Old World, many said, wouldn't learn. By 1941, however, the nation had established the draft as a form of protection. The Japanese, having come to the world stage "late" in the game, began a colonial expansion while Germany had crushed the Grande Armié of France and pushed England off the Continent. The Battle of Britain had been waged and, with help from the sneaky Lend-Lease program, won by Great Britain.

Once a significant enough attack had been carried out, at Pearl Harbor on 7 Dec 1941, the nation changed from isolationists to fighters. Characterizing the surprise attack on the U.S. Pacific Fleet as a "sneak attack" got the nation angry. There's nothing an American dislikes more than something that sounds unfair... especially if it's against them!

It was probably one of the few wars where aggression and brutality were so clear that there was no argument about who the enemy was. The Army, Marines, and Navy built fast while civilians participated in the Home Front.

Mahlon HUFF, son of Civil War veteran John O HUFF, died 10 Apr 1939 at the age of 69. He was buried at Keene Summit Cemetery but there is no inscribed headstone, only a simple fieldstone to mark his final resting place next to his parents.

1940

Sarah Margaret CAMPBELL nee WILLIAMS nee HUFF (John, William) died of complications caused by a farm accident. Her then husband Garn CAMPBELL accidentally backed the tractor into her, pinning her to a wall. She was being released from the hospital after a stay when a blood clot took her life. She was buried with her first husband, Joseph Franklin WILLIAMS at the Wysox Presbyterian Cemetery in Wysox Township, Bradford Co, PA.

1941

Japan Attacks Pearl Harbor!
December 7, 1941, Honolulu --

Few in the United States knew where or what Pearl Harbor was before 7 Dec 1941 but on December 8th just about everyone knew it was where the country was plunged into war. The US had played 'neutral' since 1939 though sympathies were generally with England (hence, the Lend-Lease game).

1945

Donald Philip DALY (Joseph-2, James-1, Michael-A) served with the US Navy in the Pacific Theater.

Joseph Eugene DALY (James-1, Michael-A) died 15 Sep 1945 of a heart attack at his home in Towanda, Bradford Co, PA. The loss was sudden and a great shock to many who knew him.
